Friends was a one-off phenomenon – pure Hollywood lightning in a bottle – and my favourite ever TV show. None of the actors, writers or producers involved have been able to reproduce its success since. You have to keep in mind it wasn’t even that well regarded at first launch. But then, episode by episode, the audience gradually warmed to the characters.
Over time, the stories and issues of Rachel, Phoebe, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Ross as they navigate life through crazy Manhattan, have become familiar to generation after generation. They are probably now the most loved characters to ever grace our TV screens. It is, without a shadow of a doubt, the biggest show the planet has ever seen.
Whilst I could never hope to emulate Friends, I like to think that perhaps I can catch the "spirit" of the show – a world where no one is ever truly good or bad, where misfortune can befall anyone, and where good communication is rarely, if ever, achieved.
We have all come so far since Friends came to a close. The first iPhone wasn’t even released until 2007 and Friends finished in 2004. Can you imagine what havoc Ross, Chandler, and Joey could create with the entire internet at their beck and call? And Rachel and Monica with their telephone messages that never worked out as intended. Then there was Phoebe with her songs and quirky hippy outlook. Throw emails and video calling into the mix and you could probably get another thousand episodes.
Anyway, I offer up my own personal spin for comment. London Friends is a reimagining with the same comic sensibilities and I very much hope you like it.
